Client — Royal Entomological Society
Field — Visual identity

The Royal Entomological Society is at the cutting edge of insect science. It’s a global network of professionals, students and enthusiasts who all share a passion for insects.

Founded in 1833, the Society has built up an enviable reputation for the breadth and quality of insect knowledge, becoming the leader in the field of entomology. They needed a dynamic new brand which people can connect with. A brand that embodies the hidden beauty of insects.

Insects at the heart

When creating the new logo, I wanted to include a representation of the insect, Stylops. This formed a strong link to the brand’s heritage as the official seal and original logo of the Royal Entomological Society featured a male Stylops. This detail continues to run through the new identity, linking the brand’s history to the present day.

Focusing on the hidden world of insects

The ‘spotlight’ is a core brand device that runs through the identity. A symbol formed from the shape of a spotlight shining down, it represents the Society’s focus on the insect world – like an entomologist peering down a microscope with a sense of excitement, discovery and wonder.

Insect movement through typography

A grid was created as a framework to house the typographic structures, giving consistency across different layouts and placements. This freedom and flexibility gives movement to the type which mimics the movement of insects.

Showcasing the vibrant world of insects through iridescence

Structurally, most insect colours are in the green to violet range, which ignited the idea for selecting an iridescent colour range to reflect the beautiful and unique nature of insects. Using these iridescent colours within motion and alongside stunning insect photography produces a dynamic modern identity with impact.
